👉 Third-place table

Group A

Group complete

Mexico had already locked up top spot in the group prior to its group-stage finale. El Tri completed a perfect 3-0-0 group stage anyway, and will play Ecuador in the next round (just about the only team that will be as comfortable playing at altitude as the co-host).

South Africa pulled off a sizable upset, beating South Korea 1-0 to finish second and advance to the World Cup knockouts for the first time. Bafana Bafana will play Canada in the round of 32.

The Koreans and Czechia were eliminated.

Group B

Group complete

Switzerland grabbed top spot - the first time the Swiss have won a World Cup group since 2006 - with a 2-1 victory over Canada. The co-host needed just a draw to finish first in the quartet, but Murat Yakin's veteran side took advantage of some Canadian lapses in defense in Vancouver.

Switzerland will face Algeria, while Canada will take on South Africa.

Bosnia and Herzegovina advanced as one of the best third-place finishers after a 3-1 win over Qatar combined with other results. Bosnia's opponent in the round of 32 is the United States.

Group C

Group complete

Brazil took care of business with a 3-0 win against Scotland in Miami to secure top spot in its World Cup group yet again. Group C crosses over with Group F in the last 32, meaning Brazil will play Japan in the next round.

Morocco defeated Haiti 4-2 to clinch second place and book a date with the high-flying Netherlands.

Scotland's hopes of advancing as a third-place finisher were extinguished Saturday with Croatia's victory over Ghana. The Scots' chances were hanging by a thread after they lost to Brazil, and now they've officially been eliminated from the competition. Steve Clarke resigned immediately after Scotland's ouster was confirmed.

Group D

Group complete

The United States lost its group finale on Thursday, conceding a dramatic 98th-minute goal in a wild 3-2 defeat to already-eliminated Turkiye.

However, the Americans had already sealed first place in the group prior to the match, and will play Bosnia and Herzegovina in the round of 32 on July 1.

Australia and Paraguay played out a goalless draw in the concurrent fixture, and that result was enough for the Socceroos to secure second place and move into the knockout stage. Eventually, that point was also enough to get Paraguay into the next round as one of the best third-place teams.

Australia will take on Egypt, while Paraguay gets Germany.

Group E

Group complete

Ecuador, a pretournament dark horse, looked to be in serious danger of an early exit after Germany scored in the opening two minutes of Thursday's contest. But the South American side battled back for a 2-1 win - Gonzalo Plata poked home the decisive goal in the 77th minute - to give Sebastian Beccacece's team its first goals of the tournament and a knockout berth as one of the best third-place finishers.

Germany had already wrapped up first place in the group going into the game.

They'll both be joined in the round of 32 by the Ivory Coast. Nicolas Pepe's brace versus Curacao sent the Elephants to the World Cup knockout stage for the first time, where they'll take on Norway.

Group F

Group complete

The free-scoring Netherlands sealed top spot with a comfortable win over Tunisia on Thursday. The Oranje didn't exactly get rewarded for winning their group, however, as they'll meet 2022 semifinalist Morocco in the next round.

A 1-1 draw between Japan and Sweden gave the Samurai Blue second place in the group and a last-32 glamor matchup against Brazil. The Swedes will advance as a third-place finisher, and they have the unenviable task of trying to slow down France's loaded attack in the next round.

Tunisia was eliminated despite Herve Renard's efforts at a rescue mission.

Group G

Group complete

Belgium scored just once in its opening two matches (both draws) and needed a victory in its group-stage finale Friday to advance. The Red Devils finally broke out in a big way, dropping five goals on New Zealand. The scoring outburst not only got them to the next round, but saw the perennial underachievers actually top the group on goal difference.

Belgium will play Senegal in the last 32.

Egypt, saved by VAR in the final minutes of its match against Iran, finished second to reach the knockout stage for the first time ever. Mohamed Salah and Co. will take on Australia.

Iran was the final third-place finisher to be eliminated. Team Melli was knocked out in heartbreaking fashion thanks to a 96th-minute Austria equalizer against Algeria.

Group H

Group complete

Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 to lock up first place in the group and send the South American side home after a dismal and dysfunctional World Cup for Marcelo Bielsa's men.

Spain will meet either Austria next.

Meanwhile, Cape Verde continued to author one of the most incredible stories in World Cup history by becoming the smallest nation to advance to the knockout stage at the men's tournament.

A goalless draw versus Saudi Arabia was enough for the Blue Sharks to finish second in the group, as Vozinha earned his second clean sheet of the competition. Cape Verde will now take on reigning champion Argentina in one of the most unlikely matchups of the last 32.

Group I

Group complete

Led by Kylian Mbappe and Erling Haaland, France and Norway had already secured passage to the knockout round prior to Friday's meeting.

With Haaland rested for the match, it was the turn of Ousmane Dembele to grab the spotlight from his fellow superstars. The PSG forward scored a first-half hat-trick and Les Bleus wrapped up top spot in the group with a 4-1 win.

France will play Sweden in the round of 32, while Norway (presumably with Haaland back in the lineup) will meet the Ivory Coast.

Senegal crushed Iraq 5-0 in the group's other contest, and that huge margin of victory got the Lions of Teranga to the next round as a third-place team.

Group J

Group complete

Argentina completed the group phase with a perfect record, defeating Jordan in a game where Lionel Messi started on the bench but came on in the second half and scored his tournament-leading sixth goal.

The reigning world champion will now prepare for a knockout match against tournament darling Cape Verde.

Austria and Algeria combined to deliver arguably the most chaotic and brilliant match of the tournament thus far, sharing six goals in a 3-3 draw that was enough for both teams to advance. Each side scored in second-half stoppage time, including Sasa Kalajdzic's 96th-minute header (just minutes after a Riyad Mahrez goal) that saved Austria's tournament.

Group K

Group complete

Colombia upset the apple cart somewhat by winning Group K courtesy of a goalless draw against Portugal on Saturday.

The result means Cristiano Ronaldo and Co. have to settle for second place in the group and a last-32 meeting with Croatia, while Los Cafeteros will take on Ghana.

DR Congo closed out the group stage with a 3-1 win over Uzbekistan and rocketed up the third-place table as a result. The Leopards will play England in the next round.

Group L

Group complete

It wasn't always pretty, but England did enough to finish first in Group L following a 2-0 victory over Panama.

Croatia beat Ghana in the group's other game Saturday to leapfrog the Black Stars for second place.

Ghana is moving forward as one of the best third-place finishers.

Panama leaves the 2026 World Cup as the only team not to score a goal.

Best third-place teams

The eight best third-place finishers from the group stage advanced to the knockouts. If teams were level on points, the tiebreakers to determine who advanced were as follows:

1. Goal difference
2. Goals scored
3. Fewest number of red or yellow cards received
4. FIFA ranking
