High winds are expected to cause issues at Shinnecock Hills on Thursday, but it was fog that quickly made its mark at the U.S. Open.

Dense fog on the Long Island golf course stopped play in the early morning after 14 players had teed off to begin their opening rounds. The USGA held the field off the course for two hours before resuming at 9:05 a.m. ET.

The delay almost guarantees that play won't finish Thursday, with the afternoon wave of players likely to come back early Friday to complete their rounds.

Winds are supposed to blow immensely later Thursday, with gusts of 62 mph in the forecast. That could force another delay in the action if balls can't remain still on the greens.
