San Francisco 49ers running back Christian McCaffrey returned to Sunday's game against the Atlanta Falcons after briefly exiting with a thigh injury.

McCaffrey, who was initially deemed questionable to return, left the contest in the first quarter, receiving treatment on the sideline and in the medical tent before jogging to the locker room under his own power.

He returned in the third quarter.

The 30-year-old had a touchdown and 74 scrimmage yards on seven touches before the first-quarter injury. He managed 26 yards on six touches after returning.

Fellow 49ers running backs Kaelon Black and Jordan James both fumbled during McCaffrey's brief absence. Black led the team with 12 rushes for 63 yards in San Francisco's 29-20 loss, the team's first defeat of the season.
